We’ve reached the doorstep of September in the Northwoods, and the shift toward fall is unmistakable. We saw some really cool weather last week, with a couple of nights dropping down into the upper 30’s. This has resulted in water temperatures falling from the 70’s into the upper 60’s on most lakes, which tends to improve fishing in general. While it looks like we’re in for a little more warm weather at the beginning of the week, don’t get too comfortable! We all know what’s just around the corner. The crowds have thinned out now that school is back in session, making for quieter landings and less boat traffic—always a welcome change this time of year.

Mornings are cold, with temps dropping into the 40’s at night with some upper 30’s expected soon! Clouds and sun will mix through the week, with a chance of showers midweek – which we still need as we’ve seen some low water on some lakes. Overall, it looks like a stretch of cooler, comfortable weather that will remind us that summer is nearly behind us. The crowds are thinning and school up here is about to start, leaving the lakes quieter and a little easier to fish.

Had some hot and muggy then cool mornings to boot! Looks as if the late August cooldown is on its way.
Lake temps are in the 72 to 74 range on average and not likely to rise with the current forecast. Fishing has plateaued or fallen off in most cases. Not that fish can’t be caught, just action not what it had been. …
